If your child has only one pair of shoes for school, encourage him to take them off as soon as he gets home so that they can air and dry out overnight. If they’re really smelly, perhaps suggest that they can air outside the back door!
Teach your child to care for his shoes. By brushing, polishing or washing his shoes, not only will they last longer and look better, but they’re also less likely to be smelly.
Your child should wash his feet well at least once a day.
Make sure that he dries them carefully, especially between the toes where more bacteria can collect than anywhere else on his skin. If he puts wet feet straight into socks and shoes, he will risk getting a fungal infection such as tinea.

Causes of Foot Odor

As you might imagine, foot odor is usually caused by sweaty feet. But it's a little more complicated than that.

Foot odor is different from other types of body odor. Most body odor emanates from the genitals and armpits, which contain apocrine sweat glands. The rest of the body, including the feet, is covered with eccrine sweat glands. What's the difference? All sweat is basically odorless, but the sweat from apocrine glands contains protein and amino acids that feed bacteria living on the skin. The bacteria generate body odor.

Sweat from eccrine glands, on the other hand, is watery and thin. It tends to evaporate pretty quickly and doesn't usually cause a smell. But your feet have about half a million of the body's 2 to 5 million sweat glands, so there's a higher concentration of sweat. Some researchers believe that this evolved back when we walked around barefoot all of the time, and the constant contact with the ground meant that our feet got hotter and needed more sweat glands to stay cool. The sweat just evaporated off bare feet.

Today, when your feet sweat, you're usually wearing socks and shoes, and the sweat gets trapped inside. Bacteria are to blame, but unlike with other types of body odor, the bacteria on your feet don't feed on sweat. One culprit is Brevibacterium linens. This bacterium lives on your feet because it likes to eat the dry, dead skin. It also thrives in warm, moist environments -- like sweaty socks. When the Brevibacteria eat, they break down an amino acid into a gas. That gas,methanethiol, has been described as smelling like rotten eggs or cabbage. If your foot odor is more vinegary, it might come from Staphylococcus epidermis. This bacteria eats another amino acid found on the skin and produces isovaleric acid. When either -- or both -- of these bacteria go crazy, the result is stinky feet.

What is Cholesterol? What Causes High Cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a lipid (fat) which is produced by the liver. Cholesterol is vital for normal body function. Every cell in our body has cholesterol in its outer layer.

Cholesterol is a waxy steroid and is transported in the blood plasma of all animals. It is the main sterol synthesized by animals - small amounts are also synthesized in plants and fungi. A sterol is a steroid sub-group.

Cholesterol levels among US adults today are generally higher than in all other industrial nations. During the 1990s there was some concern about cholesterol levels in American children. According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), nearly 1 in every 10 children/adolescents in the USA has elevated total cholesterol levels; and this was after concentrations had dropped over a 20-year period.

The word "cholesterol" comes from the Greek word chole, meaning "bile", and the Greek wordstereos, meaning "solid, stiff".

What are the functions of cholesterol?

It builds and maintains cell membranes (outer layer), it prevents crystallization of hydrocarbons in the membrane

There are three main types of lipoproteins

Cholesterol is carried in the blood by molecules called lipoproteins. A lipoprotein is any complex or compound containing both lipid (fat) and protein. The three main types are:

LDL (low density lipoprotein) - people often refer to it as bad cholesterol. LDL carries cholesterol from the liver to cells. If too much is carried, too much for the cells to use, there can be a harmful buildup of LDL. This lipoprotein can increase the risk of arterial disease if levels rise too high. Most human blood contains approximately 70% LDL - this may vary, depending on the person.

Calories we consume but are not used immediately by our tissues are converted into triglycerides and stored in fat cells. When your body needs energy and there is no food as an energy source, triglycerides will be released from fat cells and used as energy - hormones control this process.

What are normal cholesterol levels?

The amount of cholesterol in human blood can vary from 3.6 mmol/liter to 7.8 mmol/liter. The National Health Service (NHS), UK, says that any reading over 6 mmol/liter is high, and will significantly raise the risk of arterial disease. The UK Department of Health recommends a target cholesterol level of under 5 mmo/liter. Do you remember having an ear infection? Even if you don't remember, you probably had one. Most kids have at least one middle ear infection before they are 2 years old. These infections can cause ear pain and a fever.

What Is a Middle Ear Infection?

Middle ear infections are one of the most common childhood problems. Let's start by talking about infections. An infection (say: in-fek-shun) happens when germs like bacteria and viruses get inside the body and cause trouble. Germs can get into your ears. The ear is divided into three parts: outer, middle, and inner. When the germs bother your outer ear, it's called swimmer's ear.

The middle ear is a small pocket of air behind the eardrum. You have a middle ear infection when germs get into the middle ear and the area fills up with fluid (or pus), which contains germ-fighting cells. When the pus builds up, your ear starts to feel like a balloon that is ready to pop, which can really hurt.

How Do I Get an Ear Infection?

Between your middle ear and your throat there is a passage called the eustachian (say: yoo-stay-she-un) tube. The eustachian tubes (you have one on each side) keep pressure from building up by letting air move in and out of your middle ear. When you were young, especially before you turned 3, the eustachian tubes were very small and less able to keep germs out.

The eustachian tubes get longer and usually work better in older kids, but they can still cause problems. If you have allergiesor catch a cold, the eustachian tubes can get blocked up and let germs get in the middle ear. Then the number of germs can grow inside your middle ear and cause an infection.

You do not catch ear infections from other people, though you might catch a cold that then leads to an ear infection. If you have an ear infection, you might have ear pain, a fever, or trouble hearing. If you have any of these problems, tell your parent so he or she can take you to the doctor.

What Does the Doctor Do?

The doctor will look into your ear with a special flashlight called anotoscope (say: oh-te-skope). With the otoscope, the doctor can see your eardrum, the thin membrane between your outer and middle ear.

The doctor may use the otoscope to blow a little puff of air in your ear. Why? To see if the air causes your eardrum to move the way a healthy eardrum does. An infected eardrum won't move as it should because the pus presses against it and may make it bulge. An infection also can make the eardrum red.

If you have an ear infection, the doctor will make a decision about what to do next. He or she might ask your parent to watch you over the next day or two to see if you get any better. The doctor also might suggest a pain reliever to keep you comfortable.

If bacteria are causing the problem, the doctor might prescribe a medicine called an antibiotic (say: an-ty-by-ah-tik), which usually clears up a bacterial infection, so you'll feel better in a few days.

If you are given an antibiotic, it's very important to keep taking the medicine for as many days as the doctor instructs — even if your ear stops hurting. If you don't take all the medicine, the infection could come back and your ear will start hurting again.

A kid who has chronic, or frequent, ear infections might need a few other tests. They include an audiogram (say: aw-dee-uh-gram), which tests your hearing, and a tympanogram (say: tim-pah-noh-gram), a machine that checks whether your eardrum moves normally.

How to Prevent Ear Infections

What can kids do to prevent ear infections? You can avoid places where people are smoking, for one. Cigarette smoke can keep your eustachian tubes from working properly.

You also can try not to catch colds. These steps can help:

Stay away from people who have colds, if possible.
Wash your hands regularly.
Try not to touch your nose and eyes.
